In this article, we'll cover everything you need to know to get started with the MeetGeek Desktop App. Specifically, we will review:
What is the MeetGeek Desktop App?
The MeetGeek Desktop App is a native application that lets you record meetings directly from your computer, no meeting bot required. Unlike the standard MeetGeek Notetaker (which joins your calls as a participant), the Desktop App captures audio, video, and screen directly from your device, giving you full flexibility and privacy control.
It works across all major conferencing platforms: Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, and more. The app also supports in-person conversations.

Windows
Setting Up the App
1. Sign In
Open the MeetGeek Desktop App and sign in with your account. You'll be prompted to grant microphone permissions — this is required for recording.
To grant microphone access manually, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable MeetGeek.
2. Automatic Meeting Detection
Once you're signed in, the app runs quietly in the background and detects when a meeting is in progress.
When it does, a notification appears asking if you'd like to start recording.
You can also start a recording manually at any time from the app.
Note: Detection is highly accurate but may occasionally trigger during non-meeting activity (calls, media playback, noisy environments). Always confirm the prompt before starting a recording.
How to Record Meetings with the Desktop App
The app supports two types of recordings:
In-Person Meetings
The app uses your computer's built-in microphone to capture room audio — ideal for conference rooms, workshops, or on-site client meetings. For the best results, place your laptop centrally and reduce background noise where possible.
Web Meetings (Without a Bot)
The app records audio from your online meeting locally, so there's no need to add a bot to the call. This is useful when you want a lightweight recording experience or when bots aren't permitted in a meeting.
Note: Bot controls (adding, removing, or managing the MeetGeek bot) are not available in the desktop app yet. To manage the bot, use the Chrome Extension or mobile app.
What Happens After Your Meeting Ends
When you stop recording, the app saves the file locally and automatically uploads it for processing.
If the upload fails — for example, due to a lost connection — you can retry it directly from the app.
⚠️ Don't delete local recordings until the upload is confirmed.
Removing the file before it's successfully uploaded will prevent the recording from being processed.
Accessing Your Meeting Insights
Once processing is complete, you'll receive your results by email. You can also view insights anytime in the web app or mobile app.
Meeting insights are not yet viewable inside the desktop app itself — this is planned for a future release.
